How to Set Up Text Gating on the Welcome Screen

Text Gating in BlockSurvey allows you to restrict access to your survey by requiring respondents to enter a valid text value before proceeding.

This is useful when you want only specific participants to access your survey.

For example, you can use Text Gating to verify:

  • Student IDs

  • Employee IDs

  • Member IDs

  • Participant codes

  • Unique access codes

Only respondents whose entered value matches the allowed list will be able to continue with the survey.

How to Enable Text Gating

  1. Open the survey where you want to enable Text Gating.

  2. Go to the Design screen.

  3. Add a Welcome Screen and enter your welcome message.

  4. Select a verification method from the Add gating popup (e.g., Short text Identity under Text Verification).

  5. Add or upload the list of values that should be allowed to access the survey.
For example, if you are using Student IDs, your list can contain values such as: STU001, STU002, STU003

  6. Add your survey questions and Publish the survey.

How Does Text Gating Work?

When respondents open the survey, they will first see the Welcome Screen and be asked to enter the required information.

For example, if you are using Student ID as the gating value, the respondent will enter their Student ID.

BlockSurvey will check the entered value against the allowed list.

  • If the value matches an entry in the list, the respondent can proceed to the survey.

  • If the value does not match, they will not be allowed to continue.

This helps ensure that only participants included in your approved list can access and respond to the survey.

Try It Out

Once Text Gating is configured, preview or test your survey using one of the values from your allowed list to make sure the gating works as expected before sharing the survey.
