How to setup Logic Jumps / Display Logic in Questions through Data Lookup from Contact Lists

Updated over a month ago

Integrating your Contact List with Data Lookup allows you to automatically retrieve respondent information and use it to power survey logic.

This ensures that respondents only see the questions relevant to their specific profile, such as their department or role.

Follow these steps to set it up:

Step 1: First, ensure your Contact List is ready. Navigate to the Audience tab to create or import your list. Ensure you have a column (e.g., "Department") that you want to use for your logic.

Step 2: In the survey builder, go to the Settings tab.

Step 3: Under the Assignment & Formulas menu, click on Embedded Data / Data Lookup.

Step 4: Configure the Data Lookup:

  • Variable name: Enter a name for your variable (e.g., Student).

  • Data source type: Select Contact List.

  • Select contact list: Choose your specific list (e.g., "Students List").

  • Select column to retrieve: Choose the column containing the data you want to use (e.g., Department).

Step 5: Click Update Data Lookup to save your settings.

Step 6: Now, navigate back to the Builder to set up your questions. Organize your questions into groups (e.g., "Department of Engineering", "Department of Business").

Step 7: Select the Question Group and click on the Logic tab in the side panel.

Step 8: Under Display Logic, click Add condition. Set the logic to show the group only if your lookup variable matches a specific value (e.g., Student_Department is equal to Business).

Step 9: Once your survey is designed, navigate to the Email Campaign.

Step 10: Select the Audience List that corresponds to the Contact List used in your Data Lookup. This link is essential for the logic to function.

Step 11: Send your campaign. When a student opens the survey, BlockSurvey will automatically identify their department and display only the relevant question group.

Note: The Data Lookup feature using Contact Lists is specifically designed for surveys shared via Email Campaigns. The system uses the unique Record ID (RID) passed in the campaign URL to fetch the correct data for each individual respondent.

Try it now! By following these steps, you can create highly personalized survey experiences that increase engagement and ensure you collect the right data from the right audience.
