BlockSurvey can grade open-text answers using AI. You define a Rubric that describes what a good answer looks like, and the AI scores each respondent's answer against it. This saves you from having to grade every response manually.
Set Up Rubric Grading
Add a Short text or Long text question to your survey.
Click the Add Rubric button on the question.
Choose the size of your Rubric by selecting the number of criteria (up to 5) and the number of levels for each criterion (2 to 5).
Click Generate to let AI create the criteria and level descriptions based on the question label.
Review the Rubric in the table. You can:
Click Add Rubric to save it. The question will now display a Rubric label along with its total points.
Publish your survey and test it with a sample answer.
Respondent Experience
Respondents answer the question as they normally would. The AI grades their answers in the background when they submit their responses.
View Rubric Grades in Responses Tab
Go to the Responses tab. Answers submitted after you added the Rubric are automatically graded.
Click Show Rubric Grade to display the grade columns in the table. This also grades any previous responses that do not have a grade yet.
Open a response to view its Rubric Grade, including:
Total score
Percentage
Level assigned to each criterion
Reason for each criterion's grade
The final grade displayed is rounded to the nearest whole number for consistency.
If You Make Changes Later
Edit a respondent's answer: The answer is automatically regraded.
Change the points assigned to a level: The scores are updated immediately.
Change a criterion or level description: Previous grades are no longer valid. Click Show Rubric Grade again to regrade those answers using the updated Rubric.
