How to add Other/Text Entry to a Ranking Question

Updated over a month ago

The Text Entry in Ranking Question feature allows respondents to add their own custom option while ranking a list. This is useful when predefined choices may not fully capture all possible responses.

Instead of being limited to fixed options, respondents can now type in an additional answer and rank it along with the existing options.

When should you use this?

Use text entry in ranking questions when:

  • You want to capture unanticipated or emerging options

  • The list of choices may vary across respondents

  • You want qualitative inputs without losing the ranking structure

  • You’re researching preferences, priorities, or feature importance

How it works

  • Create a ranking question

  • Navigate to Option Sets and click on Add text entry

  • Select the options that needs a text entry, and enable the checkbox

  • By default, Required is enabled. You can disable it manually if needed.

Once the survey is submitted, the text entry responses will appear in the Responses screen, both in:

  • Overall responses

  • Individual response views

Each text entry is captured along with its rank position.

Adding a text entry to ranking questions, especially through an “Other” option gives respondents the freedom to provide specific, meaningful answers that may not be listed in the predefined options.

This makes ranking questions more inclusive, flexible, and accurate, helping you capture insights that better reflect real user priorities without sacrificing data quality or clarity in analysis.
